OUR STORY

ethical cotton clothing

Fferal founder Helen is a sustainable fashion designer. Starting out as a machinist in a factory in Leicester at the age of 16, she went on to study Textile Design at university before spending 35 years designing clothes for well-known high street brands. Becoming more aware of the damage the fashion industry was doing to our planet she was driven to seek a sustainable alternative. Becoming a mother to a child with autism and Down syndrome gave her the push to do something about it...

The Fferal Movement

Fferal Clothing was born as an antidote to fast fashion. We've created a series of permanent collections, and we don’t do seasonal newness for the sake of it. Since it's launch in 2017, Fferal's timeless pieces have become loved for their comfort and style. They are well-designed, long-lasting and intentionally gender neutral, so you can hand-me-down, recycle and up-cycle to your heart’s content - and to Mother Nature’s delight!

Our Factory

Throughout the journey from cotton field to customer doorstep, we’ve worked hard to minimise our impact on the environment. All of our cotton is vegan and sustainably sourced in India. Our pieces are made in Portugal by people earning a proper living wage. We have a 7 year relationship with Fernando who owns and runs our Portugese factory. He treats his machinists like family, recycles, and runs his processes with minimum waste. Why? Because he has always done things in this ethical way, and he wouldn't entertain doing it in any other.

Our sustainability commitments

  • Our clothing is ethically-made in Portugal by people who earn a living wage.

  • We only use cotton - and all of our cotton is certified vegan and responsibly sourced in India.

  • We use "deadstock fabric", using up leftover fabric for our pieces rather than printing new bespoke fabric.
  • We optimise fabric consumption in our garment production - eg: our neck gaiters and beanies are cut in between t-shirts to maximise the lay. Leftover fabric gets sent to a recycling plant which is used for filling.
  • We minimise plastic waste in the making and shipping of our clothing. We never use labels, swing tags or plastic bags. Our clothing arrives to you in a recycled and recyclable mailer with care instructions on a recycled card.
